Setting Up Thunderbird

Mozilla Thunderbird is a free, open-source email client for Windows, Mac, and Linux. This guide explains how to add your OnePoundEmail account using IMAP.

Connection Settings

Have these details ready. Your server hostname is in your welcome email and in DirectAdmin.

Incoming mail (IMAP)
  Server: your-server-hostname
  Port: 993
  Security: SSL/TLS

Outgoing mail (SMTP)
  Server: your-server-hostname
  Port: 587
  Security: STARTTLS

Username: your full email address (e.g. you@yourdomain.com)
Password: your email account password

Adding Your Account in Thunderbird

  1. Open Thunderbird. If no accounts are set up, the account setup wizard will open automatically. Otherwise, go to File > New > Existing Mail Account.
  2. Enter your name, full email address, and password, then click Configure Manually.
  3. Set the incoming protocol to IMAP, enter the server hostname, port 993, and SSL/TLS.
  4. For outgoing, enter the SMTP server hostname, port 587, and STARTTLS.
  5. Set the username fields to your full email address for both IMAP and SMTP.
  6. Click Re-test to verify the settings, then click Done.
Thunderbird may detect settings automatically. If it does, verify the IMAP and SMTP details match those above before clicking Done.

Troubleshooting

  • If Thunderbird cannot connect, click Configure Manually and enter the settings directly.
  • Ensure the username is your full email address for both incoming and outgoing.
  • If you see an authentication error, reset your password in DirectAdmin and try again.
  • Try port 465 with SSL/TLS if port 587 is blocked.
