Docs Troubleshooting Mailbox Quota Full

Mailbox Quota Full

If your mailbox reaches its storage limit, you may receive quota warnings or find that you can no longer send or receive emails. This guide explains what to do.

What Happens When Your Quota is Full

  • Incoming messages may bounce back to the sender.
  • You may be unable to send new emails.
  • You will see warnings such as "Mailbox is full" or "Quota exceeded."

How to Check Your Email Usage

  1. Log in to your DirectAdmin control panel.
  2. Go to E-Mail Accounts.
  3. Locate your email address in the list.
  4. Check the Usage / Max column to see your current storage.

How to Free Up Space

  • Delete old or large emails, especially those with attachments.
  • Empty your Trash, Spam, and Sent folders.
  • Download emails to a local client such as Thunderbird, then remove them from the server.
  • Enable automatic deletion of old mail in your email client settings.

Need More Storage?

If you are regularly running out of space, you may want to upgrade your plan to get a higher storage allocation.

See our Upgrades and Downgrades guide for instructions on changing your plan.

Prevent Future Issues

  • Set up email archiving to offload messages to your device regularly.
  • Use IMAP with auto-deletion rules so old mail is removed from the server after download.
  • Monitor your storage usage via DirectAdmin or the control panel periodically.
